Background
Developing "Space Link" for Astronaut Well-beingacts
In 2024, as the Team Lead UX Designer for the NASA Space Apps Challenge Hackathon, I led the design of  Space Link, a VR workout game aimed at supporting astronauts' mental and physical health on extended missions. This tool connects astronauts with family, friends, or new contacts on Earth, helping them manage isolation and engage in muscle-stimulating physical activities in microgravity.
Problem Discovery
Physical and Emotional Strain
Astronauts face challenges in maintaining physical health, emotional well-being, and staying engaged during long space missions. The microgravity environment causes muscle and bone loss, requiring regular exercise, while emotional isolation and limited recreational options further contribute to mental stress.

Our service addresses these challenges by offering immersive VR exercise programs that help astronauts maintain their physical health, while also providing opportunities for social connection through shared VR activities with loved ones on Earth. Additionally, a variety of VR sports and games are available to keep astronauts entertained, motivated, and mentally grounded throughout their missions.

Physical and Mental Health Maintenance in Microgravity
Astronauts face rapid muscle and bone loss in space, as well as mental challenges due to isolation. To combat these, they exercise daily using specialized equipment and may use VR tools to create relaxing environments and virtual workout partners. These methods help maintain both their physical and mental well-being during long missions.

Reflection
Leading my first UX team project taught me a lot about guiding a group, especially when opinions differed or communication broke down. Helping the team realign and move forward was a valuable experience.

Developing the concept and storyline took a lot of thought, but it was worth it. Seeing my ideas resonate with the team made me realize the importance of taking time to explore and refine ideas.

Overall, this project helped me grow both as a leader and a collaborator, and it reinforced the value of patience and perseverance.
